An art collector’s heart and the power of relationship

We recently received a gift from a local business that came with a story so good we want to share it. Actually, the gift was from an anonymous individual and was facilitated by the business, Quilt Designs in Goshen, Indiana. Dave and Shirley Shenk are the owners. I’ll let Dave’s words tell the story:

” One of our customers. . . has been collecting highly artistic sculpted wooden buckeye and manzanita burl pieces from our gallery for many years. Recently he came to pick up three pieces which he had been paying for on layaway. As we were discussing these new additions to his art collection, he suddenly interjected, ‘With all the national and international disasters recently and with all the local needs, I think I should donate one of my pieces to help out in a small way.’ He had no particular organization in mind. I mentioned that our church (Belmont Mennonite) had just delivered an entire van load of diapers to CCS and viewed this as a strong organization. He liked the idea of a contribution to  CCS.

“Together we brainstormed how to insure that his donation would reflect fair market value of this art piece. We agreed that Quilt Designs would sell the piece, rather than donating it to an auction. Two hours later he returned with one of the finest buckeye burl pieces from his entire collection. We decided together that when it sold, Quilt Designs would donate the entire amount to  CCS. We are certain you will find good use for this donation from one of our caring and generous customers.”

Thank you, Dave and Shirley, for sharing words about Church Community Services and for developing relationships in which such conversations can happen. To the customer, thank you for paying attention to those around you and responding from your heart.
